Endovascular Treatment of Brain Aneurysm
A
brain aneurysm results when the walls of an artery in the brain stretch,
forming a ballon or sack, due to age and blood pressure. Aneurysms
can become larger over time, and may eventually tear and bleed, resulting
in a serious medical condition that requires emergency treatment.
Our advanced technology employs a catheter to fill the aneurysm
with tiny platinum micro-coils. The body will then naturally wall
off the aneurysm, permanently reducing the risk of bleeding.
Recent studies have shown that non-surgical treatment of brain aneurysm
provides a significantly better outcome than surgery for many
patients. The
relative risk of death or significant disability at one year for
patients treated with coils was 22.6% lower than in surgically-treated
patients.*
For smaller brain aneurysms, monitoring the condition may be sufficient.
When appropriate, we provide our patients with annual screenings
to make sure the aneurysm is not threatening their health.
